January 28

It was great to have some sunshine today. Able to go on three walks, thanks to my wife, Barry, and Carl. It was amazing that such a little amount of snow upsets so many people in so many ways. It was nice since very few people were out, so I was able to just go for casual walks in the street. Enjoyed hearing from so many of my friends. Glad to see that Jim and Sandy made a trip to my favorite place (Costco). I laughed out loud about your little stowaway (mouse) you discovered. My mind drifted to another of my favorite places (Palm Springs) after reading Glen's entry. Thanks Reed, for reminding me that OSU has a baseball team and that U of O will try to compete on that level this year. Should be interesting. Thanks also to Dar for reminding me of my years of coaching girls' basketball. Those were some of the most rewarding years I had and know that your daughter will continue to bring you those wonderful memories. Sorry that Jefferson is laid up, but like Mongo, you are pawn in game of life. Thomas, the almond toffee crunch arrived again, which satisfies my candy desire and I appreciate that. Thanks for all of these. This is what I enjoy hearing about and look forward to hearing more of. As for me, my weight continues to fluctuate, but it is okay currently. Food still does not look that appealing, but I am able to get enough down. Here's to more days of sunshine and waiting for the moment that food will begin to have an interest for me. I especially can't wait until pastries start to have an attraction for me! I miss my doughnuts! Have a great week!!

Ron,

We only had the chance to meet once and fortunately it was for a run with Chris in Manhattan Beach. I started my 12 week ramp up to Boston yesterday. As I train I will keep you in my thoughts. Any thing I can do for you never hesitate to ask.

Best, Paul Solorzano

Hello Ron
Want you to know I think about you daily Ron and am anxious for that doughnut you mentioned to start sounding good to you again. Brad stopped by the other day and we had a good conversation, it had been a while since we had seen each other. I was thinking to myself when exactly was it and how old were we when I first met one of my all time favorite families. Several indicators of that time come to mind. The first was as follows; "Hey Jim, you need to come over, Ron can dunk the ball". At that time Brad I marveled at your ability to dunk the ball looking at each other with smiles on our faces. We both knew in time our turn would arrive but knew we would have to be patient, that hoop soared above us at about seven and a half feet. Must have been around 4th grade maybe 5th, that was Longs Shoe Store baseball time. Vivid in my mind is a weekend trip to the coast with Brad, Norm and Betty. Norm must have been patient. I hadn't golfed at that time and after 4 or 5 holes of golf Norm said, "Don't look up, keep your head down, I'll watch the ball for you." I did exactly what Norm said to do, then I herd the word FORE. I looked up and coming towards us in the fairway to the left was a golfer with a push cart. He kneeled behind his cart and I dead centered it. Just one of those things that has always stuck in my mind.

I'm missing that sunshine you mentioned Ron, wet snow going on, now. I looked at the extended weather update and its showing a chance of snow middle of next week, odd weather for here but we'll see sun soon.

Look forward in visiting with you Ron. Stay strong and positive

Hello, Ron and Kathey:
Great to hear your words and that your spirits are high. Speaking of donuts . . . Mary Anna Bakery in Albany remains our gold standard. I have yet to find another buttemilk donut that can compete and my boys devour at least two of the maple bars each on any given Saturday morning that we're in Albany. Are there any bakeries in Salem in the same league? We've got Krispy Creme in Issaquah, but in my mind, it's not just not the same beast.
Looking forward to sharing more deep reflections . . . Tina

Hey Ron,

When we were driving down 1-5 last night at 11pm from PDX we hit snow in Woodburn. Driving 50mph on the interstate was strange and yet fun as I love the snow in the headlights. My Ranger sucks in the snow. It was really coming down hard and sticking through Salem and I thought of you.

I've been offline for ten days. Catching up on your blog entries was a mixture of tense and yet life affirming feelings. Am glad you have only one more round to go and then let the radiation do its work.

It was nice to be warm in Hawaii for the long week and yet I was sad I missed some good snowfalls here. Maybe it's because when I was teaching I loved those snow days! And like you, I can't understand others who get upset when it snows. Bring it on!
I talked to Carol Roberts this morning and can't wait to get up to BB and ski 18 holes with Thom.
And I look forward to the day I can join you Ron in the snow on skis.

Well, I better catch up on more things here. Maybe we can get a walk in next week. Will give ya a call soon.

All my best to you and Kath.
Cheers,
Doug

I'm digging the Blazing Saddles stuff! I saw the movie when it came out in '74 at the Whiteside Theater. Can't remember which fraternity bros I was with but one was out on the sidewalk waiting for the next show said they heard me laughing inside! Anyways, Carey's I extend a Laurel and Hardy hand shake for this blog.

I am looking forward to seeing you and Mom in two days. Costco trip, woo hoo! Love you, Dad!

Is Blazing Saddles where Mongo came from? I have been wondering. Mongo make Mike laugh hard - remembering the story of when my father was followed upstairs by a drunk man. "Mongo straight." Hmmmm...Mongo, you keep telling yourself whatever you need to.

Hey Ron. They just released the initial drawings of Oregon's new baseball stadium. Only Oregon, and more importantly Phil Knight could build two stadiums at the same time. Anyway they have the drawing up on GODUCKS.com. Hope you have a great week!
