January 31
I truly am tired of this weather. Was able to get out for a couple of walks thanks to Mike Strickling (drove up from Albany), Barry, and Carl. The hiccups are finally gone, but the appetite still is not what it should be. Enough of that. Glad to hear from Buck, Jim Ruthruff, Doug, Jeff, Harold, Michael, Reed, and Kelly. Much fun with Mongo from Blazing Saddles. Glad that a lot of us have that sense of humor and were able to follow the silliness that we were having. Answering a few questions, I don't think that we have hired a coach yet for the vacant Beaver job. Don't think that the McMinnville connection has decided to take it, Buck. The endless supply of money from Uncle Phil always amazes me. Can't wait to see the size of the Duck's baseball complex. We Beavers, however, know that it is not the size, but what you do with it. Right, Reed!? Only problem today was when Carl came over and we waited to watch the Arizona/USC basketball game and they decided to air Sports, Bloopers instead. Here's to sun!!!

There is nothing better in my mind to be sitting in the 3rd base seats above the Beavers dugout at Goss stadium with the students(wishing I was still that young)and harrassing the umps and the other team players in the warm spring sun, except sitting there with Ron and family doing the same thing. We have to figure out a way to do that Ron.I'm not counting on anything regarding the ducks at this point next year, but you're right, Uncle Phil is flexing his wallet again. They have a pretty high profile coach they bought from Cal-State Fullerton but I still would like to see that 1st Beaver/Duck game.Glad to see you are well enough to update the Blog Ron.Getting rid of the hiccups is a start, now hopefully the appetite comes back.Once it comes back,I'm sure I will hear your stomach growling from here.Your strong supportive family's comments on the blog help also, sometimes I can kinda figure out what is going on even if you haven't updated the blog yourself.NEXT MONTH IS THE START OF SPRING.it's been a while since we have been able to say that.I'm looking forward to walking with you again.Hopefully by then I will be able to bring donuts or a Couple of Costco hot dogs to you.You and your family are in my thoughts.

Ron and Kathey, we are thinking positive thoughts for you and check your blog everyday. Jim has decided that there is just too much preservative junk in his whole wheat bread, so we dusted off the breadmaker, and he made his first loaf last night."Betty Crocker" says hello, but that he's busy making his next loaf...LOL

Hey Ron, I have an idea to scare those hiccups away! I'm bringing Jay John, Ritchie McKay, Paul Greig, and Dick Harter to visit with you for 5 minutes each, what do ya think? When you tell them, "get the hell out of here!", the hiccups will be gone too! Seriously, I hope the treatments are working and someday soon you'll be able to look back and say you beat this thing. You are getting wonderful support from everyone and your spirit is nothing less than the Gladiator himself. I'll see you later Ronnie Mike, love and kisses from the LUNKER!
Hello, Ron and Kathey: Wonderful to hear that your spirits and determination remain high. Record snow levels and avalanche risk have literally shut down our mountain pass and our ski plans this weekend. It looks like we'll be building legos and reading alot of library books. We're also hosting a German dinner for our neighbors; perhaps when your appetite returns we can offer you some Bavarian Beers, warm cabbage salad and pork roast with a dark beer sauce (does any of that appeal?!)
We're thinking of both of you everyday, Tina
Okay, everyone, I have a bone to pick with some of you. We all appreciate the comments - I know that it is making a huge difference for my dad. The constant stream of support from all his friends is truly what has kept him going, with such a positive attitude.
But please, my mom's first name does not contain an 'E'.
Kathy.
Sorry to point this out, but it would irk me just a little if someone continually spelled my name "Micheal". I do love you all, though! The whole family is so grateful for the comments, and consistent reminders of what a great man our father is.
And Reed, I would love to get your input about Ernie Kent. I think he is going to be fired after this year - huge letdown after last year's run. Unless he can repeat what the Ducks did last year (run the table in the conference tournament and finally lose to the eventual champions in the NCAA tourney), I believe he is going to be gone! Both Pac-10 Oregon coaches fired in the same year - wouldn't that be great?
SEE YOU TOMORROW, DAD!
I think there is potential for Ernie Kent to get fired if the season continues in this way. One interesting thing about his contract is his buyout clause if actually less than his last contract. If I remember correctly I think the university can buy out his contract at any time for 1 million dollars (Insert Dr. Evil Laugh here)
Also last week, it was reported somewhere that Mike Montgomery, the old Stanford Coach would consider Oregon, but not Oregon State. I am not a big fan of the guy from Gonzaga, but Mike Montgomery did some great things at Stanford.
Looks like it could be an interesting off-season.
As Buck said I am not sure about the Duck's baseball team either. I hate baseball, but as a Duck fan, I am definitely interested. I don't expect the Ducks to be good right away, however I am impressed with the university's ability to raise money. Shoot, our athletic director probably pledged over a million dollars himself.
I do know that with four good starting pitchers, a team can be competitive. I hope we can be competitive with the Beavs in a few years. I just think it is another cool element to add to the rivalry.
Oh, Reed, Reed, Reed. While Duck baseball does bring a cool element to this inter-state rivalry, it is just evidence that Kilkenny feels inadequate.
U of O is like a jealous older sibling (too bad the school is actually younger, but that's not the point). They got used to beating up on their younger sibling (OSU or OS, or whatever they call themselves) in various sports - be it basketball, football, track and field, whatever. But the younger sibling found a niche, something (s)he really excelled at. So all the kudos started pouring into this young, whipper-snapper.
At that point, jealousy reared its ugly head in the older sibling. (S)He, who became so accustomed at being the "favorite," that (s)he really despised being left out of the limelight. So, even though the older sibling did not even participate in this "niche," the feeling was that, "well, if my younger brat could accomplish this feat, it'll be a breeze for me. Especially with all of my drug and/or shoe money!"
Okay, so it is the end of the day, and I rambled a bit. But I think you understand my analogy.
Now, to get off my soapbox, I agree with you. It may well be a great rivalry (sooner, rather than later, most likely because of all the cash flow UO/Phil Knight has). However, we, as a society, are very fickle. As soon as Oregon State leaves the national scene (no more World Series), and if Oregon does not do well in the first few seasons, the state of Oregon will lose interest. College baseball stories and recaps will again be relegated to page 7 in the Oregonian. College baseball was not popular in Oregon until OSU started making waves. So as soon as the waves recede, we will ignore it again. To sum up, I think the intensity of this rivalry will die down very quickly.
I wonder if anyone read this whole spiel...
I totally understand your analogy. I find it funny when Duck Fans say that OSU's baseball success has nothing to do with UO wanting to start a baseball program.
At the same time though UO's success in Football and the upgrades in those football facilities led to OSU's expansion of Reser Stadium and the building of the Indoor Practice Stadium. In that case, you wanted what we had. In this case the roles are reversed.
I 'll probably get destroyed for saying this, but 10-15 years ago, most Duck Fans could have cared less about OSU. Autzen Stadium used to cheer when we heard the Beavs were winning. It was sort of a "good for them" mentality. Our rival was Washington, although I'm sure that Washington could have cared less about us. That's why we started building up our facilities. It was to keep up with the Huskies.
OSU's improved football program with Dennis Ericson at the helm led to a Civil War Rivalry that has intensified in the past 7-8 years. Baseball is just another extention of the competiveness that started on the Football Field.
I can not speak for other Duck Fans, but last year, I totally cheered for your baseball team. Admittedly, I didn't their first year, not because they were from OSU because I don't like baseball, and all the coverage took away from football coverage.
I think you may be right that no one will care about baseball in a couple of years, but it is fun right now anyway. Like I said earlier, I don't even like baseball that much, but this has my interest.
Obviously I read the whole spiel.
Bloopers -> they should have shown this during the Duck/Beaver game today. That would be an appropriate Blooper. I wonder if today's game will end up 0-0 and they'll call it a tie? Have fun at Costco-North today.

Wow...that's some fabulous entertainment from Reed & Micheal, thank you! Daddy-O I hope that you & Mas & Amber had a blast at coffee while Micheal & Tiff ran in this horrendous weather! Thought of you all...oh, wait...I was asleep. Thought of you after I woke up & hope none of you drowned out there! If only this weather would just stop...but, alas, we are in Oregon. Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil says it's not going anywhere for awhile. Lots of love! By the way (little brother), eal is for giving me such a hard time for the "whatever" part of the ivs. Xoxo.
Dear Costco Customer,
As a valued member of the Costco family, we are pleased to recommend, from time to time, movies that we think will enhance the unique, Costco experience. The movie we are promoting this month is “The King of California”. And, as an added bonus, mention the name of the movie and receive a free menu item at our food court. (Offer expires 1/31/08)

Hi Mother and Father! I have been computer-less for a little while so I am about to get updated on everyone's comments. I hope you had a wonderful evening with Aar. It was great to see Micheal today, even though it was a tough run. Micheal and I ran while Ambir took care of the puppy. Then I came home and cleaned ALL day. Andy was happily surprised to see everything organized! It was great talking to you today and I will be talking to you real soon. Thank you for meeting Micheal, Ambir and me at Costco yesterday! It was the highlight of my week! I love you guys! Love you too Micheal. :)
